Hong Kong Journalists Association founder dies

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the global organisation representing over 500,000 journalists worldwide, today extended its sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) founder, the late Jack Spackman.

The highly respected journalist passed away in San Francisco on August 25 at the age of 70, after having made a memorable contribution to press freedom and journalists' rights in Hong Kong and enjoying an esteemed career in Australian journalism.

Jack was born in 1935, in Grenfell, New South Wales, Australia. Jack's desire to be a news reporter took him to employment at various Australian newspapers until 1967, where he travelled to Hong Kong and began work at the now-defunct The Star and China Mail.

In 1968 Jack founded the HKJA while freelancing for Australian newspapers and radio stations. Since that time, Jack fought for the rights of journalists and the freedom of the press, instilling ethics and civil liberties in Hong Kong's journalism collective.

"The HKJA has a proud history of organising journalists and representing their interests in Hong Kong. This history can be attributed to Jack's founding work, where he fought for press freedom and the proper recognition of journalists by the government in an era of uncertainty and challenge", said IFJ President, Christopher Warren.

Jack's work during the 1970s was instrumental in securing improved working conditions and ethical standards for journalists across Hong Kong.

"On behalf of the IFJ, sincerest condolences and sympathies are extended to all those who have been touched by the life and work of Jack", said the IFJ President.

"The IFJ will continue to support the independence, philosophies and goals of the HKJA", said Warren.
